Chang Gung Memorial Hospital was established in 1978, and has since grown to include the Chang Gung Institute of Technology (established 1987) and Chang Gung University (established 1988). With four medical centers throughout Taiwan and more than 10,000 beds, Chang Gung now boasts the largest patient capacity in Taiwan.

A staff of more than 5,000 physicians, nurses and health professionals offers treatment in a full range of medical specialties: plastic and reconstructive microsurgery, orthopedics, laparoscopic gynecology procedures, urology, and cord blood transplantation. The hospital employs award-winning board certified physicians; some have been practicing in their respective fields for as long as 32 years.

In 2006 the hospital purchased the Da Vinci Surgical Robotic System for minimally invasive procedures. Also in use is the Novalis-shaped beam for treating cancer, and the intensity-modulated arc therapy linear accelerator. In addition, Chang Gung operates a Stereotaxis Niobe Magnetic Navigation System, a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), and a Magnetic Navigation Cardiac Catheterization System. It can do Hybrid OR with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). In 2014 Taiwan's first Proton Therapy Center was established at the Chang Gung Linkou Branch, in Taipei.

In the field of fertility services, the hospital employs assisted reproductive techniques in the form of in-vitro fertilization. Other specialty equipment includes Trans-umbilical Single-Port Laparoscopes and cancer radiation therapy instruments.

Every year Chang Gung Memorial Hospital receives around 10,000 international patients, mostly from mainland China, the United States, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia. The International Medical Center offers patients a personal coordinator to guide and assist with travel arrangements, organize airport pickup and hotel accommodation for extended stays, and book appointments and consultations. Translators are available for English-speaking patients, as well as Mandarin, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Russian, French and German.
