Joint replacement, also called arthroplasty. This procedure restores a deteriorated joint or mobilizes a malfunctioning joint, usually by removing arthritic surfaces on the bone and replacing them with an implant. Total joint arthroplasty is replacement of both sides of the joint. Hemiarthroplasty replaces only one side of a joint. Joint replacements for knees, hips, ankles, and shoulders are available.
