Patients can save big when buying drugs online or abroad, if some cautions are heeded.

Standing in line recently at my local Rite-Aid pharmacy, I was not particularly surprised to see two elderly customers in front of me pay nearly $600 each in co-pays and out-of-pocket for what turned out to be the price of their monthly prescriptions. I sensed from their haggard demeanor that $7,200 a year was not chump change for these two individuals. Call for Patient’s Rights to Healthcare Costs

During a recent annual physical, my GP noted a melanoma that he found worrisome, and suggested a biopsy. When, after some discussion, I asked what the procedure would cost, he seemed genuinely bewildered at such a question. And when I pressed him, I became convinced he honestly did not know the answer.

Two days later, I called a neighborhood radiology lab and an oncology specialty clinic to make the same inquiry. Again, I got the now-familiar runaround, and I never did get a clear cost estimate on a comparatively straightforward medical procedure.

On a recent business trip to Southeast Asia and all too aware of my impending sixtieth birthday next January, I reserved an extra day in Bangkok for some routine medical tests and procedures. The story will likely be familiar to you: my eyesight ain't what it used to be, I can barely hear my dinner companions in restaurants, and it was once again time for that dreaded colonoscopy. So I booked a vision exam, a comprehensive auditory test, and the endoscopic-style procedure.
